  1. There’s a part of me that is really impatient with the whole user-as-victim thing when it comes to online privacy. Yes, sites are collecting information about us. And if we are adults, it is incumbent upon us to protect ourselves.

As with everything else in life, we must behave responsibly and champion our own welfare. We can’t legitimately blame Facebook or Twitter or online banking if we are behaving like helpless children and act carelessly with our own personal information.

Hello, Facebookers! I want to encourage you to do these things. Read. Understand. Act in your own best interest. If you can’t do these things for yourself, then get the hell off the interwebz.

This is the 21st century. Join it!

PS – But no matter how Grumpy I am, I will still direct people when they ask, because at least they want to know how to protect themselves!

  2. I seem to see everything in new media lately with a male/female lens- but I found it interesting that Annie and Sarah both were aware of an A- lister vs. everyone else sensibility at SXSW and Mike felt that the atmosphere was much more inclusive. I wasn’t at SXSW but often feel myself aware of the internet “celebrity culture” and the how many followers can you get social media marathon. Is it that women feel less entitled in general that make us more aware of the cliques we are not a part of and of the “will you serve my ego by coming to the restaurant that I tweet I am eating at” manipulation-and is it the man’s natural sense of entitlement that assumes leo laporte is tweeting his lunch plans because he is really dying to meet me?

And, on internet privacy (thanks for a great show guys! as usual you got my engines revved)- I have a thirteen year old niece and I often will click through when she comments on a friend’s status. I am amazed by how many of her thirteen year old girl friends have both their walls and their photos available to the public. Often relatively suggestive photos. Again I can’t help but wonder why a thirteen year old girl- from a online savvy generation has chosen to make her photos public (lets not even get into why their parents allow it and what their parents do or dont’ know about online privacy). Could it be that these young girls love the positive reinforcement they get from their suggestive photos? What does that say about how we have taught are youngest generation to value themselves….
